OVERVIEW:
The "Personal Information Protection Act“ was passed in July of 2016 and is designed to regulate the use of personal information by organizations in Bermuda. Personal Information, broadly speaking, is any information that can be used to identify an individual. This includes the individual's name, date of birth, email, address, personal telephone numbers, photographs and video footage and so on.
• PIPA recognizes the importance of protecting individuals' rights regarding their personal information while acknowledging organizations’ have a legitimate need to use personal information. PIPA includes definitions for terms like "biometric information," "business contact information," and "genetic information.“
• PIPA applies to all organizations using personal information in Bermuda, whether they are doing so in automated or non-automated processes, that form part of a structured filing system.
• The Act will be fully implemented on January 1, 2025, and between now and then, organisations are expected to take steps to educate staff on the requirements of the act and their responsibility in terms of collecting, using, storing, sharing and deleting personal data based on the stipulations of the act.
The PIPA e-learning short course helps individuals to understand the Act in more detail and so that they can master responsible data privacy practices. A Certificate of Completion will be received at the completion of the course.
